New Prague Cinema was developed in Warsaw’s Praga district on the site of the legendary Praha Cinema, built in 1949 to designs by Jan Bogusławski and Józef J. Łowiński as the first cinema constructed in post-war Poland. In 2007, the historic building was replaced by a modern multifunctional complex combining cultural, office and commercial functions.
KARMAR participated in the project as the shell-and-core contractor. During construction, the company was responsible for delivering the building’s main structural works, demonstrating a high level of technical expertise, organization and problem-solving capability throughout the project.
A Modern Entertainment and Cultural Destination
New Prague Cinema was designed as a contemporary cinema and office complex. The building includes three cinema auditoriums with a combined capacity of 555 spectators, as well as modern office space. The facility is fully accessible, ensuring convenient use for people with disabilities.
The cinema is equipped with advanced NEC and Barco digital projectors, traditional 35 mm projectors, and multimedia projection systems. It also supports interlock screenings and features a broadband internet connection enabling live broadcasts and special events. High-quality sound is provided by the Dolby Digital Surround EX for Cinema Professionals system.
Architecture Inspired by the Heritage of Polish Cinema
A distinctive feature of the building is its façade, decorated with twelve monumental bas-reliefs depicting iconic figures of Polish cinema. The interiors are complemented by archival photographs of actors and preserved elements from the former Praha Cinema, creating a meaningful connection between the site's history and its contemporary role.
The combination of modern architecture and references to the cultural heritage of the original cinema has created a landmark building that continues the tradition of film culture at Jagiellońska Street while meeting the expectations of contemporary users.
A Building Still Active Today
Today, the building continues to serve cultural, office and commercial functions. Part of the complex is occupied by Praha Cinema, operated by the Mazovian Musical Theatre named after Jan Kiepura, which hosts film screenings, special events, festivals and live broadcasts.
The building also accommodates office space leased to public institutions and commercial tenants. Since 2009, part of the facility has housed offices of the Mazovian Voivodeship Marshal’s Office.
By combining cinema, office and service functions, New Prague Cinema remains one of the most recognizable cultural landmarks in Warsaw’s Praga district. The building continues to play an active role in the city’s cultural life, carrying forward a cinematic tradition that has been associated with this location for more than seventy years.
